This residence is a sensitive addition to an existing rural log compound. A new, more modern interpretation of the style of the existing flanking log home and log garage was used for the stucture that links them, which contains the core element of the compound-kitchen, dining, living room and family bedrooms upstairs.
Energy efficiency, recycled green materials and sustainability drove decisions on this project. reclaimed timber framing intricate log joinery and local limestone are used to form a core element counterpoint to more modern materials and expressions. more detail Kinnickinnic Valley, WI. Residence

Home Design, Campbell Residence, Seattle, WA
This residence was inspired by a dialogue between art and architecture: the relationship between the two evolving through continuous design collaboration. It was this process that sought to create a detailed fit for the owners’ collection of American Craft Art. Intimate building details were created to display specific pieces.
Commissioned architectural works within the home also became elements of building craft: steel structures act as doors and displays, jewelry functions as cabinet hardware, and found objects are assembled into light fixtures. Finishes such as tile, plaster, steel, and concrete express the building’s art.
The home perches on a unique Seattle site: embedded into the hillside it overlooks a wild forested greenbelt. Articulated outdoor spaces and building site walls act as urban sculpture surrounded by the native landscape. more detail millerhull

Home Design, Lake Washington Residence, Mercer Island, WA
This 4000 sf residence and carport is located on a steep wooded site on Lake Washington. Entered from above via a bridge, this residence transitions between a steep forest and open sweeping views of Lake Washington. The bridge lands on the 3rd floor covered roof terrace, which offers protection and an upper level deck. A central steel and concrete stair descends through the house to the living area on the ground floor which opens to the shore.
Two large cantilevering wood framed boxes rest on a continuous concrete wall. They contain the more private program spaces on the second and third floor; a self contained guest house is located on the top floor. The "boxes" are clad on all surfaces in clear cedar siding which continues to clad the ceiling under the boxes. The edges are trimmed in contrasting metal. The glazed void between the boxes is occupied by the main stairway. As one descends down the stairs, the view alternates between open water and hill side. The house is naturally ventilated; the central stair act as a "stack" to pull air through the house.
The primary materials for this house are wood framing, exposed concrete and concrete floors, red cedar siding, galvanized and black steel. The window systems are wood exterior clad in mill finish aluminum. Cabinets are bamboo veneers on apple-ply plywood. view more millerhull

House Design, The ugly house - Ty Hyll - Ty un Nos (house built in one night)
The headquarters of the Snowdonia Society is at the famous Ugly House ('Ty Hyll'), on the A5 at Capel Curig. The Society rescued this well-known cottage from dereliction in the 1980s, and now uses it both as its office and as a show-house for visitors. As you can see, despite its unusual name, it is far from being an 'ugly house'!
Though the true origins of the Ugly House remain shrouded in mystery, legend tells us that it was a crude house built in the 15th century by two outlaw brothers. It was a ‘Ty Un Nos’ - or house built overnight. Under ancient law, he who built a house between sunset and sunrise, with walls, roof and smoking chimney, could claim the freehold.
By the mid 19th Century, the Ugly House is included in ‘A Tourist Guide to Wales’ as a ‘quaint cottage’. Its reputation grew so that more than a 100 years later visitors are still charmed by the old house and its contents.
By 1988 the cottage was derelict, and was bought and restored by the Snowdonia Society. The renovation work was lovingly carried out by Peter Kirby, the husband of the Society’s founder, the late Esmé Kirby. It is now a Grade II listed building, housing on its upper floor the Society’s offices while the ground floor has a display about the Society’s work; a small sales area and a depiction of how part of a 19th century Welsh cottage would have looked.

House Design, MacCallum House
The MacCallum house (1882) was given to Daisy Kelly MacCallum by her parents William and Eliza Kelly shortly after her marriage to Alexander MacCallum in 1879. Daisy, Alex, and their son Donald lived there until 1885, when the Family moved east of Fort Bragg and later to San Francisco. After Alex died in 1908, Daisy moved back to Mendocino when she had the house moved forward and west to it’s present location.
Daisy MacCallum lived in the house until her death in 1953 at 94. Donald continued to live in the house until his death in 1960. The house became a Bed and Breakfast in 1974. The current owners, Jed and Megan Ayers and Noah Sheppard have done much to upgrade the property to it's current magnificent state.

The downside to concrete block foundation walls is the fact that they are porous. International building code laws require that the outside of foundation walls be covered with a water repellent tar-like material. That is a good step to try to waterproof your block foundation wall, but it is not foolproof. It is simply the first step of many you will end up taking to keep your basement dry. Keep your dream home design simple yet very effective, this helps you every way in getting the project done in time.

An insulated panel wall has been proven to have an R-value of 24. What happens to a panel wall when the weather gets cold and mean? Nothing, it retains its R-24 value. The foam in a panel is not compressed in any way, and it is sealed tight for the entire area of the panel. No gaps mean no cold air coming into the home, and no warm air leaving. This certainly helps you in having a cozy home design.

How to Save Your Building Cost #3
6. Do part of the work yourself. If you know before you start that your building budget is at or close to the limit, you may find it possible to economize quite substantially by doing some of the finishing work yourself. Ask your builder to itemize the deductions he would make from the total price if you and other members of your family were to undertake certain portions of the painting, laying of floor tile, landscaping and other work suitable for your skills. Don't overdo, however. It's far more important to have a good job than to save a few dollars. And do keep in mind that very likely your mortgage arrangements will require prompt completion of all phases of the job, whether you do it or the builder.
7. Act as your own general contractor. If you have the time and ambition, you may save money by making your own separate arrangements with plumbers, electricians, carpenters and all other required tradesmen. In effect, you are serving as the general contractor, with each of
them as a sub-contractor. It does take time and effort, perhaps several hours a day over several months, so think about it carefully. One caution: Check on insurance requirements for protecting against liabilities that may be involved if one of the workmen is injured on the job.
8. Obtain as much product knowledge in advance as you possibly can. As emphasized above, the worst possible economy is that of selecting inferior products. But there are well-established low-cost products to fill all of your construction needs—products that in many instances will out-perform more costly selections. The best way to develop the needed product knowledge is by receiving and studying the literature offered by manufacturers through the many product listings in this issue. The information is entirely free, and it may save you considerable money—not only by pointing the way to some of the relatively inexpensive materials available, but also by helping you to avoid costly mistakes.

Details for Design and Construction, Builder's Guide to Cold Climates, Joseph Lstiburek
A region's climate is arguably the most important factor to consider when a structure is built. If inappropriate building techniques or materials are used, a house could be uncomfortable, energy inefficient, or, worst of all, subject to early failure. Overbuilding is inappropriate, too, because it wastes valuable materials. Lstiburek, a forensic engineer and authority on moisture-related building problems, has created two useful titles that will guide homebuilders/remodelers toward the best design for their geographic area. For the purposes of this book, cold climates include New England, the southern Great Lakes states, most of the Midwest, Plains, and Mountain states, coastal British Columbia, and southern Ontario. Mixed climates include the coastal Pacific Northwest and the Southern states from central Texas to the Atlantic (excluding Florida and the southernmost portions of other states). Both titles are remarkably similar--only those details that apply to a particular climate differ. This parallel structure should prove useful to readers who build/design in several climates and use both books. Each area or system of a house is covered--foundations, framing, plumbing, electricity, insulation, heating, ventilation and air conditioning--with profuse illustrations (more than half of the book) supplementing the brief text. Appendixes cover many aspects of energy efficiency. Although they are over the heads of most do-it-yourselfers, these guides will prove useful to builders and carpenters who live in the relevant areas (one hopes that all of North America will eventually covered). They should be included in comprehensive public library collections.

How to Save Your Building Cost #2
3. Obtain bids from more than one builder. Once you have received your blueprints and materials lists, ask several different builders—perhaps two or three—to submit firm prices for doing the complete building job. It's a good idea to ask them in turn to get several bids from different building materials dealers covering the full quantity of materials that will be needed. Sometimes, keep in mind, it is a false economy automatically to accept the lowest bid. A builder's reputation for competence and reliability is just as important as being less costly than his competitors —perhaps in the long run more so. But the business-like approach of requiring competitive bids will make each of the builders tend to be less careless in making their estimates.
4. Avoid changes and minimize delays after the work has started. Once the building job is underway, every hour of delay potentially adds to your cost. Even though the builder is usually working on a firm-price basis, you probably are paying interest charges on construction financing, insurance premiums and the like that go on whether the crew is working or not—plus the cost of your present shelter. You should plan thoroughly in advance, try to make all your selections of materials and colors and the like well before the builder needs to order them. This will help to avoid waits for delivery of needed products. Most of all, once you have selected blueprints on a sensible basis, try to resist the temptation to make frequent or numerous changes, no matter how small. Each costs money. Giving free rein to your every whim may add thousands of dollars to the job.
5. Use standard, stock-size, brand-name materials produced by well-known American manufacturers. Such products are not only, in most cases, less expensive than off-size alternatives, they are also likely to perform better in the long run, which gives you continuing economy. They are as low in cost as it's possible for quality products to be—because they are mass-produced. More over, the carpenters and other craftsmen building your home will work more efficiently when they are using products with which they are familiar.

How to Save Your Building Cost
Eight suggestions on how to hold down costs without sacrificing quality.
Economy is one of the major objectives of any family's homebuilding program, of course—one increasingly difficult to achieve as inflation continues. With the cost of both materials and labor steadily rising, it is more important than ever to consider every possible way of cutting costs.
Ruling out the possibility of economizing by cutting the quality of building materials you use—obviously an
unwise idea—here are some of the areas you will want to consider.
1. Eliminate potentially large design fees by obtaining low cost blueprints for a pre-designed home. When he designs a home on an individual basis, an architect must of course charge a substantial fee for his time and effort. The charge, usually based on a percentage of the total cost of construction, may range from several hundred dollars to several thousand dollars. For a fraction of this cost, you can obtain throughly detailed, professionally engineered blueprints for any of the homes in this issue. All you have to do is complete and mail the order form at the front of the book. The reason the cost is so low is simply this: That same house will be built—from the same plan—by other families in all parts of the country. All of these families are in effect "dividing up" the design fee. It's a great economy for each ... and each family has the benefit of obtaining a home that has already been construction tested and popularity proved.
2. Keep economy in mind when you select a plan. Many of the most luxurious homes on these pages are far more economical to build than might appear at first glance. Others were planned to fill a particular type of need, with economy as a definitely secondary consideration. Unless money is no object, it's well to study each of the plans that would meet your basic needs with the objective of trying to determine which might be the most economical to build. A perimeter composed of four straight walls makes a home less expensive to build than one that has jogs and setbacks. A two-story home or 1 1/2-story Cape Cod provides more living area at less cost than a one-story design. There is a great economy in having all plumbing confined to a small area in the home—with kitchen and bath facilities on the same wall, for example, or with one bath above another on separate floors. to be continue

9.6-Volt Cyclonic DustBuster, CHV9600, Black and Decker
Powerful suction and cordless mobility come together in the Black & Decker cyclonic DustBuster. An impressive 9.6 volts, the compact little vacuum makes quick work of dry spills around the house or cleanup in the car or woodshop. Like other DustBuster models, this one collects debris in a bagless pop-off container. In addition, it uses cyclonic suction to minimize clogging in the filter, in turn maximizing power and increasing run time. Easily controlled with one hand, the vacuum manages well and is relatively light for its power. A single sliding switch turns it on and off and a simple push button releases the dirt cup for emptying. Cleverly stored onboard, a crevice tool and a brush attachment help you target narrow spaces and upholstery. A charging base is also included and can be mounted to the wall for tidy storage and ongoing re-juicing. On a full charge, the machine runs up to 11 minutes at a stretch. Measuring approximately 15-1/2 inches long, it carries a full two-year warranty from Black & Decker.

SteamVac with Clean Surge, by Hoover
This powerful home steam vacuum saves you the expense and hassle of having to rent a steam cleaner and keeps rugs, upholstery, and bare floors (other than hardwoods) looking like new. The powerful 12-amp motor combined with five spinning brushes that operate at either high or low speed lift the usual dirt and grime out of carpets. By pulling on the trigger in the comfortable upright handle, this deep cleaner releases the included carpet/upholstery cleaner and hot tap water. For more stubborn stains or for high-traffic areas, this SteamVac also has a Clean Surge feature, which sends an extra blast of cleaning solution into the stain by simply pressing a button on the handle. When cleaning is complete, release the trigger and the SteamVac forces hot air into the cleaning path so you can do a few dry strokes over the stain. This deep cleaner has two separate water tanks to keep clean water apart from dirty water. The top tank holds the detergent and 1 gallon of hot water and automatically mixes the two so you don’t need to get your hands wet. The lower tank holds the dirty solution picked up from the carpet and unlatches to easily pour out into a sink without spilling. For cleaning stairs or upholstery, this deep cleaner has a long 8-foot hose and a special stair/upholstery nozzle that scrubs out spots. Other features of this deep cleaner include a brush indicator, which informs you that the brushes are spinning; an on/off foot pedal; a handle release pedal; and a 27-inch wraparound cord. The Hoover SteamVac is covered by a full one-year warranty.

Hard Floor Cleaner, Steam Mop, Green Tea, by Bissell
Ideal for the chemically sensitive or those with small children, the Bissell Steam Mop deep-cleans hard-surface floors using the power of pure water alone. No harsh (or expensive) cleaners means no fumes or residues to irritate lungs or muddy delicate finishes, while the use of hot steam rather than buckets of water leaves floors dry in just seconds. Heated and ready to use in 30 seconds, the remarkably quiet mechanism works something like an iron: steam is dispensed on demand, rather than continuously, by pressing the trigger while passing the mop over the floor. Hot steam easily removes hardened and sticky gunk, especially if the mop sits over the mess for a few seconds. (Leave it in place 15 seconds to actually sanitize the cleaning surface.) The machine steams for approximately 15 minutes before the tank needs to be refilled, but there's no lag once you refill it.

How to Select Your New Home
Think you'd like a one-story ranch home ... or are you more the split-level type? Whatever your answer, it's extremely important that your choice of a home design be based on thorough analysis of your family's real needs-rather than a whim of the moment.
The selection is comprehensive in every sense. All of the basic design types are represented, and in addition there are wide variations in sizes and design styles. Split-levels, two-stories, ranches, Cape Cods, French provincial, Early American, California contemporary... they are all here for you to consider. Out of such a great variety, how do you narrow the choice down to the one design that will best meet your requirements.
Start out by deciding what your basic minimum requirements are in terms of the number and types of rooms. Have you one boy and one girl? Then obviously you need at least three bedrooms. Two boys and two girls? Possibly in this case you can still get by with three bedrooms if each is large enough for two single beds —plus appropriate furniture for clothing storage, study and other needs. Do you have frequent guests from out-of-town? If so, an extra bedroom is clearly required. Frequent parties? Then there must be a bathroom or powder room conveniently located.
Questions like these will help you to settle on perhaps ; few as a dozen homes that would satisfy your basic needs. Then you can go on to matters of a more personal nature, those related to your taste in design or to the limitations of your budget. Do you want to avoid or minimize stair-climbing? If so, a one-story home is of course your best bet. But if you also want the most possible space for each building dollar, perhaps a split-level would prove to be a good compromise.
Consider the other homes in the area where you intend to build. If most of them are of rather traditional style, you could become a somewhat unpopular neighbor by building an extremely contemporary home — and in fact might tire of it yourself over the years if it doesn't fit in with the atmosphere of your area. Something of the same consideration also applies to the size of your home; it's not a good idea either to have substantially the largest or the smallest house on your block.
Whatever your needs, desires and tastes, the writer are confident that there is one design in these pages that's perfect for you and your family.

How to Select Your Home Products
In each case, the products shown are of the highest quality available. The manufacturers offering the additional information are leading firms in their fields with well-deserved reputations for quality and integrity.
Probably in the course of building your home you will have reason to use products in nearly every one of the categories represented. Therefore, it's wise to get all the information you can now-even before you begin to negotiate with builders and dealers. In working with these professionals, it's always a good idea to be able to "talk their language." Modern House, Cedar Chase, Taplow, Berks, for Sale
This three-bedroom 1960s house in fine original condition was built by the renowned development company Span. It was designed by the architect Eric Lyons, whose work has been celebrated at an RIBA retrospective. The house is located on the desirable Cedar Chase estate in the village of Taplow, on the Buckinghamshire / Berkshire border.
Cedar Chase consists of 24 houses built between 1964 and 1966 and set in approximately five acres of landscaped gardens. It is without doubt one of the most attractive and best kept of the thirty estates built by Span in Britain. Commended in the ‘Good Design for Housing’ scheme in 1967, the estate retains its original architectural charm and community atmosphere.
This is only the second time that this house has been offered for sale, and it still has many of its original features, including wood parquet flooring. The house is light and airy, with plenty of glazing, and has a courtyard terrace area overlooking a mature south-facing walled garden. It also has its own garage at the foot of the garden.
Cedar Chase provides a tranquil environment, with good transport links to London and the West. Modern House, Ramsbury, Nr. Marlborough, Wilts, for Sale
You can buy this home, £725,000 Freehold. This single-storey architect-designed house is well located in the historic Wiltshire village of Ramsbury (six miles from Marlborough). The three / four bedroom property, set on an attractive and secluded plot of approximately ½ acre, has recently been granted planning permission for a significant extension.
Martin Sylvester, an architect who is thought to have trained under Denys Lasdun, designed the house in 1969. This is the only known example of a house designed by Sylvester, who became better known for his furniture designs. Many original features are still in place, including a copper fireplace, Swedish door furniture, Crittall double-glazed opening lights and Wealden brick detailing. Some updating has taken place in the kitchen and bathrooms.
With its generous glazing and voluminous interior spaces created by mono-pitch ceilings, the house is light and spacious in feel. The L-shaped plan means that there are views of the rear gardens throughout. This interplay between outside and inside – and the exposed brickwork of the interior – add to making this a fine example of a Modern house.
The property can be found on the edge of Ramsbury and has a short drive that provides ample parking. Surrounding the house is a large and well-maintained garden, from the top of which you get views of the Kennet valley. Ramsbury is an appealing village in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and dates back to Saxon times. There are a small number of shops and pubs in the village, including the renowned pub and restaurant The Bell. There is also a good primary school in the village.
Further dining and shopping opportunities can be found at Marlborough, one of the UK’s finest market towns. Swindon or Newbury can be reached by car in less than 20 minutes. The M4 (junction 14) is a 15-minute drive away and for train travel to London, Hungerford station can be used. House for Sell, St. Briavels, Wye Valley, Glos
This spectacular and secluded architect-designed house can be found on a tranquil site of approximately 28 acres in the Forest of Dean. Designed in the late 1960s by Bob and Tim Organ, the house has approximately 3,400 square foot of internal space (including five bedrooms and a large studio) arranged largely over a single storey. Many of the fantastic original features have been preserved (such as the octagonal kitchen units) – however the house could benefit from some updating.
Situated in an enchanting woodland setting, the house was designed by the Organs to “relate to the beauty of the landscape”. With numerous floor-to-ceiling windows throughout the house, there is ample opportunity to enjoy the outlook of the house into the woods and onto the gardens. The large 32-acre site incorporates a drive up to the house, extensive woodland, lawns and even a (now derelict) swimming pool. For further details about the history of the house please click here. The property is serviced by mains water and electricity, a private drainage system and an oil-fired heating system.
St. Briavels is a historic area on the borders of Gloucestershire and Monmouthshire that stands on a limestone plateau above the Wye Valley. It is well known as a place of outstanding natural beauty and is well know for its 12th century castle. A primary school, doctors surgery and two pubs service the village of St. Briavels. Within ten miles of the property, the popular towns of Monmouth and Chepstow both offer a wider range of shopping and dining opportunities, as well as schools.
The area is a popular holiday destination offering wonderful opportunities for walking, horse riding, fishing and other activities. Tintern Abbey and other historic monuments are within easy reach. The house has previously been successfully rented out at as a self-catering holiday house, providing a potential income for any owner. more detail the modern house

House for Sell, Focus House, Prah Road, London N4
Prah Road is located very close to two Underground stations: Finsbury Park (Victoria and Piccadilly Lines) and Arsenal (Piccadilly Line). Local amenities can be found at Highbury Barn and Blackstock Road, and the popular restaurants and shops of Islington's Upper Street are also within easy reach. The open spaces of Finsbury Park, Highbury Fields and Clissold Park are all nearby.
Focus House is a multi-award-winning eco home offering inventive living spaces flooded with natural light. It was designed by Bere Architects and completed in 2006.
Internally, the house offers 1,350 sq ft of space, including an open-plan reception room and kitchen, three bedrooms, a study, a bathroom and a separate shower room. The reception room has Scandinavian-made full-height retractable glazed doors onto a pretty south-facing garden, which also contains a separate outbuilding, currently used as an office.
The house has been built on a wedge-shaped landfill site between two existing Victorian houses, with a narrow street frontage and a much wider rear elevation. There is no house directly opposite, so from inside you can see right through the ground floor from the garden at the back to the trees on the opposite side of the street.
Focus House has been constructed using a timber frame, pre-fabricated in Austria and brought to London in kit form, with striking zinc cladding. The metal skin provides a durable exterior that further insulates the structure. The house's strong eco credentials mean that it requires only minimal heating. Furthermore, solar thermal installation allows the building to generate as much as 60% of its own hot water.
Award:
Best Eco House", Grand Designs Awards 2007
Royal Institute of British Architects Award 2007
"Best Small House of the Year", British Homes Awards 2007
Shortlisted for the Stephen Lawrence Prize

House for Sell, Winscombe Street, London N19
Designed in 1964 by the renowned architect Neave Brown, this is a wonderful three-storey, three/four-bedroom house with a terrace, garden and mature communal gardens. The internal layout of the house remains as Brown intended it, and there are many original details still intact.
The house forms part of a terrace of five houses in an area of Dartmouth Park that was known in the 1960s as Highgate New Town. The project represents one of the finest examples of social housing in north London, and the sense of community is as strong as ever. Neave Brown himself continued to live at Winscombe Street until recently, which says much about the success of his scheme. For more information about the project, see the History section.
This particular house has been restored and updated to an exacting standard by the current owners, with the inclusion of a bespoke kitchen. They even commissioned the engineering firm Max Fordham, who worked with Brown on the original design, to replace the services at the house.
There is a communal paved forecourt at the front of the house with space for off-street parking. It is entered at first-floor level, via a spiral concrete stairway from the street. Internally, accommodation is flexible and amounts to 1,177 sq ft. Off the entrance hall is a bathroom and the kitchen / dining area, which is accessed through an original sliding door. There is a glazed sliding door from the kitchen onto a terrace, with a steel spiral staircase down to the delightful and secluded gardens. The house has its own private section of garden, directly adjacent to the building, which in turn gives onto the communal land.
The second floor houses the master bedroom at the front and a fantastic 19ft reception room at the rear, which has fine southerly views over the gardens. On the ground floor is a bedroom at the front, a utility room, another bathroom and a further reception room / double bedroom. The latter could be configured as two single bedrooms if required, and has its original sliding room divider as well as two separate doors to the garden. An original timber spiral staircase links the three levels.
The communal gardens are shared by the residents of all five Neave Brown houses. Their upkeep is the joint responsibility of all residents, and there are occasional garden parties and get-togethers.
Winscombe Street is a quiet cul de sac made up mostly of brick terraced houses, located in the popular area of Dartmouth Park, close to Highgate. The Neave Brown houses are positioned at the end of the cul de sac. Tufnell Park (Northern Line) and Archway (Northern Line) Tube stations are both within easy reach. The house is well located for the open spaces of Hampstead Heath and Waterlow Park, as well as the shops, restaurants, cafés and pubs of Highgate Village, Swains Lane and Junction Road. more detail the modern house

House for Sell, The Avenue, Nr Richmond
Extensively remodelled and extended by the architect Tom Politowicz of Foster & Partners, this substantial Victorian house close to the Thames would make a fantastic family home.
The house offers 4,220sq ft (392sq m) of living accommodation, including six double bedrooms, two reception rooms, a cellar and ample storage under the eaves. The star of the show is a large glazed kitchen extension at the rear of the property, which opens onto an attractive garden. There is also a garden at the front with space for off-street parking, as well as a terrace at first-floor level.
This double-fronted house is one of a group of buildings classed as Houses of Merit that collectively make up the St Margarets estate, created in 1864. The estate consists of around 75 houses in total, all grouped around approximately 16 acres of private gardens bordering the Thames. These fabulous communal grounds, which include lawns, woods and a tennis court, can be accessed directly via the garden gate, creating a unique family-friendly environment. Various social events are held in the grounds, including barbeques and children’s sports days.
The house has been designed with an architect’s eye for detail, and includes limestone kitchen worktops, under-floor heating and Vola bathroom fittings. An article in The Independent described the architect’s glass extension: “The 9sq m extension has been built from structural glazing, with no visible means of support. Two solid walls support the sides, with huge high windows running horizontally along each, but the back wall, extending the width of the house, and the ceiling, are glazed. Coated with a layer that repels dirt and water, the glass requires attention only once a year. Inside, the limestone floor incorporates an under-floor heating system which, combined with the excellent thermal properties of the glass, allows for economical heating costs.”
The house is located a short walk from St Margarets, which has excellent local shopping facilities. In the other direction is the Thames, where a footbridge leads to Richmond, which has a wide variety of shops, restaurants and bars, as well as the open spaces of the Old Deer Park. The towpath also leads to Kew, Isleworth and Twickenham. For connections to central London, the District Line of the Underground runs from Richmond station, and regular train services run from St Margarets station direct to Waterloo. The house is also very well-placed for access to the M3, M4 and M25 motorways. more detail the modern house

House for Sell, Clerkenwell Green, London EC1
£2,300,000-Freehold. Approximate gross internal area: 2,381sq ft / 221sq m. This is a very rare example of an internationally acclaimed modern house in a fantastic central London location, within striking distance of the City. It was designed for their own use by the late British architect Richard Paxton and his wife, Heidi Locher, and was recently described by the architecture critic Kenneth Powell as “one of the great London houses of the late 20th century”.
The house forms part of a larger development with a deep plan on a linear site. The attractive main building, which contains offices and apartments that look out onto Clerkenwell Green, uses stainless steel, Portland render and expanses of glass.
This house is tucked away at the rear of the site, and is invisible from the street. It is entered via a shared gated passageway, as well as its own internal courtyard, offering a high level of privacy and security. Accommodation is set over three floors, with five bedrooms, three bathrooms, a garage and a roof terrace.
This is a thoroughly Modernist interpretation of a courtyard house, the centrepiece of which is a spectacular double-height kitchen/dining area. Paxton has made the most of what is a dense urban site by pointing the view upwards, and bringing in light from above. The “courtyard” is enclosed by an ingenious retractable glass roof, designed by Monty Ravenscroft. The wall facing the kitchen was originally planted with climbers, which became an indoor or an outdoor garden depending on the position of the rooflight. Situated off this main space is a more intimate sitting room with a modern fireplace. The two main bedrooms, each with en-suite bathrooms, overlook the “courtyard” dining area from first-floor level.
Clerkenwell Green is one of the most desirable locations in central London. It is close to a wealth of restaurants, cafés, pubs and bars, and within walking distance of the City. The nearest Underground station is Farringdon (Circle, Hammersmith & City and Metropolitan Lines), which also runs National Rail services to various destinations including Luton Airport. The house is also well-placed for access to the new Eurostar terminal at St. Pancras. more detail the modern house

House for Sell, Heathwoods, Walton-on-the-Hill, Surrey
Heathwoods is an exceptional Modern house set in 2.5 acres of secluded grounds in an outstanding Surrey location. The price also includes a four-bed lodge house with self-contained annexe (currently rented).
Designed in the late 1970s by the architect Malcolm Lovibond, the house offers spacious lateral living over two floors. Currently arranged as a six-bedroom house with a suite of home offices, Heathwoods also has an indoor pool complex with a gym and a number of impressive rooms such as the principal drawing room – a large, split-level space with floor-to-ceiling glazing giving extensive views of the gardens. The impressive landscaped gardens surrounding the house feature a rich variety of trees and plantings as well as an all-weather tennis court and garages.
Lovibond designed the house for a celebrated musician after winning the commission in an architectural competition. What was once a recording studio on the lower ground floor has been changed into a snooker room with a home cinema and a triple-aspect garden room. The design of Heathwoods is clearly influenced by the Scandinavian architecture of Alvar Aalto and others, particularly in the way that it sits easily in its leafy surroundings. The long, low profile of the house is a classic Modernist feature of the design, as is the way the interior is arranged as series of flowing, light-filled spaces. The house has been fitted with a copper roof and double-glazing throughout.
The site of Heathwoods was formerly known as Dowding Castle and was once used by Henry VIII as a hunting ground. A large Victorian house once occupied the site but was destroyed by fire, leaving behind only the lodge house that is included in the sale. The lodge is a 4-bedroom detached house with double garage and a self-contained one-bedroom annexe. The current owners rent out the lodge for approximately £1,400 per month.
Heathwoods (postcode: KT20 7TJ) is very well situated off the Dorking Road, within a short drive of the M25 either via junction 8 (Reigate) or 9 (Leatherhead). Commuters also have a choice of railway stations in Kingswood and Tadworth within easy reach, with the mainline stations of Epsom and Sutton only fifteen minutes' by car. The nearby countryside of Walton Heath, Box Hill, Headley Common and Epsom Downs makes this a much sought-after area. Walton-on-the Hill is a picturesque village, with many public footpaths and bridleways. There are a number of good pubs, restaurants and schools all within short driving distance. House for Sell, Hampstead Lane, Highgate Village, London N6
An extremely rare and exciting renovation project. This wonderful 1960s house was designed by the architects Stirling and Margaret Craig for their own occupation. It has remained unchanged since it was built, and is now in need of updating throughout. The house is located on a fine plot close to the centre of Highgate Village.
Accommodation is currently arranged as 4/5 bedrooms, 2 reception rooms, kitchen, dining room, utility room, 2 bathrooms and a garage. There is off-street parking space and a courtyard garden at the front of the property, as well as a shed. To the rear is a 60ft garden with lawn and mature trees.
The house has retained its original under-floor heating system and metal-framed windows. The entire rear elevation of the house is glazed – with a fine aspect overlooking a south-facing garden – and evokes the spirit of Californian Modernism. The more Brutalist street façade consists mainly of exposed blockwork, much of it hidden by trees.
The house is located at the eastern end of Hampstead Lane, close to the shops, restaurants and cafés of Highgate Village. The open space of Hampstead Heath can be reached by walking down Fitzroy Park.
The architect Stirling Craig practised in Stevenage after the Second World War, and later taught at the Architectural Association and the Bartlett School of Architecture. more detail the modern house

Machly/Schwarz Single-Family House, Mautern, Austria, by Christoph Mayrhofer Architect
This house is located in Mautern, Austria, just 37 miles west of Vienna and a few hundred yards from the Danube, designed by Austrian architect, Christoph Mayrhofer. The house is simple, with two-story 3,000-square-foot, two bedroom, three-bath, narrow building that runs north to south, taking advantage of the views. Self contained like a tube, the timber-framed house has large openings at each end and one in the middle to the west, where it opens to a terrace and garden. A concrete carport and one-story guesthouse forms a hard barrier between the street and the glulam-clad main house, with the terrace and garden between the two structures.
The interior is open and flowing, with a variety of views to other parts of the house, both inside and out. For example, the master bedroom has a large window that looks down into the living room below, and from the terrace above the guesthouse you can
look down through a glass roof onto the porch and into the entranceway, right on through to the living room at the opposite end of the building. The architect used a minimal palette: wood, stone, and glass. The main level’s floor is gray granite, while the second floor bedrooms and library have oak flooring. Open, elegant, and connected to the landscape, the house took Mayrhofer’s clients from disbelief to enthusiasm.
Mayrhofer says the project was not without controversy or difficulty. He worked with local contractors and supervised the construction until completion, having to deal with opposition from the neighborhood and local authorities who didn’t know what to make of the design. The architect credits his clients for going from skeptics to
avid proponents and fighting to bring the project to life.

Box House, Boulder, Colorado, by PyattStudio LLC
Pyatt was build his own house, called Box House, as an independent study design studio (Pyatt studio), Pyatt turned his 1948 900-square-foot, two-bedroom, one-bath bungalow in Boulder’s Newlands neighborhood into a three-bedroom, two-bath renovation and addition that explores issues of sustainability, prefabrication, and indoor/outdoor living.
Pyatt, as client, student, designer, and builder was charged with adapting the house to suit the needs of his growing family (he was newly married at the time with a baby on the way) while fulfilling the exploratory goals of his school program.
Luckily for the architect-in-training, the older, working-class neighborhood he lived in had no zoning or style restrictions. Without much money to spend on the project Pyatt set out to keep the bones of the old house while adding a new wing containing a kitchen, pantry, bedroom, bath, and laundry room. Pyatt chose plywood in a rain screen application as the cladding for the old part of the house and corrugated metal for the new box, as well as a standing seam roof. All the cladding arrived at the site precut and predrilled based on CAD drawings. Also like puzzle pieces were the walls themselves, which were made of prefabricated Agriboard-a brand of structured insulated panels (SIPs) made of straw. Prefabricated in West Texas, the panels arrived and the walls were in place in just four hours.
Keeping waste way down was key to the project, and Pyatt had all the cabinet parts-made of birch plywood-cut from 4-by-8-foot sheets of plywood-precut and assembled onsite, and scrap pieces were used as the spacers between cabinets. With a new baby soon to move in, Pyatt opted for materials containing no VOCs or formaldehyde. The house was wired for both photovoltaics and solar hot water, but reality set in. Clerestory windows bring in the sunlight all day, and an outdoor courtyard gives the house more living space in the sun. More detail Archrecord

Unique House Design, at some Place
I put this picture from Flickr, some body was wrote this article, my be you can find the more info from this house, thanks. word from writer: "I hate to say but this is not my house! - but I would love it to be - I am rather obsessed with it!!!
I was just looking through some picture files on my computer when I remembered I took this photo when we were on holiday recently in Fuerteventura. Its close to where we stay in Jandia (pronounced Handier). It is beautiful but I think its owners were getting a little miffed at my excitement as I madly clicked lots of photos!
There is another one in the process of being built next door - well I say being built - we have been to the same place in Fuerte now for 7 years running (because we love the place so much!) and the next door house seems to have run out of funds as its not changed in years! - (I would love to buy it and decorate it like this!!) - the other house is still a building site but its not closed off so we were cheeky (and a little silly really I guess) and had a wander around!
The little dog did its best to make sure we knew we weren't welcome!!!

Aluminum-Sided House, Texas Christian University
This aluminum-sided house, with a very cool minimalist style, what with the plain white paint on the rest of the house and the placements and shapes of the windows in the large aluminum structure, makes it a prime candidate for a house that comes straight out of an '80s way-into-the-future sci-fi movie, is one of them.
The house, located at the corner of West Bowie Street and Lubbock Avenue, and across the street from Texas Christian University's Neely School Of Business, is in stark contrast to the modest brick homes in the area, all built in a much different and simpler time.

House Ball, Unique House
Artistic boulder on Bethlehemkirchplatz, dowtown Berlin. Various household items and pieces of furniture seem to be tied to this thing - ready to roll on.
Actually (and it's only thanks to Gertrud K. that I learned about it), this nine meter piece of pop art ("House Ball" by Claes Oldenburg and Coesje van Bruggens) reminds of Bohemian (Czech) refugees who found a new home in Prussia in the 18th century.
The oversized bundle stands for the belongings they brought to this very part of Berlin, the Friedrichstadt, where many of them settled down for good and built their "Church of Bethlehem" (Bethlehemkirche) of which there is nothing left but a floor plan recently paved ino the sidewalk.

Book Reference, The Houses That Sears Built (Paperback)
This major revision also includes reproductions of newly-discovered original documents from the Sears Modern Homes Department as well as compelling interviews with men who worked at the Sears Mill in Cairo, IL. You'll also hear the fascinating stories from Sears Homeowners who actually built their own Sears Kit Home many decades ago!
Want to learn how to identify a Sears Home? This book contains new graphics, photos and easy-to-reference bulleted points that will tell you and show you - step by step - how to identify a Sears Home.
It also includes four brand new chapters, such as "Chapter 3 - The Amazing Mr. Sears; A Brief Look at The Handsome Genius and His Store," "Chapter 5 - Milling About Sears Homes, A Look Inside the Sears Mill at Cairo, Illinois," "Chapter 8 - Homart Homes, The 'Other' Sears Homes, "Chapter 11 - Those Dandy Houses, Testimonials; Trivia and Reminiscences of Building a Sears Modern Home."
Since the first edition of The Houses That Sears Built was published in Spring 2002, the author has appeared on CBS Sunday Morning News, PBS's History Detectives, A&E's Biography and WGN-TV News, as well as the New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, Dallas Morning News and more than 50 regional publications. As a result of this publicity, Ms. Thornton has received more than 1,000 emails and letters from readers all over the country, telling stories and sharing precious memories about their own "Sears Modern Homes," and she incorporated many of these stories into this new edition.
This new edition of The Houses That Sears Built is more than a revision - it contains a tremendous amount of new information and trivia and wonderful photos that the Sears Home enthusiast will treasure and enjoy!
About Sears Homes: Between 1908-1940, Sears customers ordered about 75,000 houses out of the Sears Roebuck and Company mail-order catalogs. The houses were shipped by rail to city lots and farms all over the country.
Each "kit home" contained 30,000 pieces, including 750 pounds of nails and 27 gallons of paint and varnish. A 75-page instruction book showed home buyers, step by step, how to assemble those 30,000 pieces of house.
Only 10% (approximately) of the Sears homes in the country have been discovered.
Because of this, our communities’ best architectural treasures – our grand collection of Sears homes – are being damaged by remuddling and worse, demolished.
There is tremendous interest in this topic and hopefully, The Houses That Sears Built will spur that interest even further.
When you have finished reading The Houses That Sears Built you will be your community’s expert on Sears homes. You’ll learn how to identify Sears homes from the inside, outside and from courthouse documents. You’ll learn the interesting details of Sears homes’ construction. One chapter is devoted to the $1 million order of Sears homes that was shipped to Carlinville, Schoper and Wood River (Illinois).
Another chapter is devoted to "The Lost Sears Homes." These are Sears homes which appeared only once in obscure Sears Modern Homes catalogs and were not included in "Houses by Mail: A Guide To Houses from Sears, Roebuck and Company," by Katherine Cole Stevenson and H. Ward Jandl.
About the Author:
Since 1999, Rosemary Thornton has traveled throughout the Midwest studying, researching and learning more about Sears Homes.
This newest revision of The Houses That Sears Built features pictures of Sears Homes in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri, Kentucky, Ohio, Wisconsin, Maryland, Washington, DC and Virginia.
Rose has appeared on CBS, PBS, A&E, WGN-TV and her book has been featured in the New York Times, the Christian Science Monitor, Cleveland Plain Dealer, Dallas Morning News and many more.
Her email and other contact information is in the back of the book, if interested readers would like to write her for more information.

Unique House, Isabella's Little Pink House
A color wheel shows the principal hues divided into two major segments. The area made up of red, red-orange, orange and yellow-orange is said to consist of warm colors, while the area made up of yellow-green, green, blue-green, blue, and blue-violet is said to consist of cool colors. The so-called primary colors (when mixing pigments for paint, for example;) are red, yellow, anil blue, and all other colors can be created by mixing these together; when all three are mixed in proper proportions the remit is a deep gray approaching black. When mixing light itself, however, the three primary colors are different (reddish-blue, or magenta, yellow, and bluish-green, or cyan), and a mix of these three produces white light; this is the principle of color television.
We say a color, or chroma, is saturated when it cannot be made any stronger than it is, that a red or a blue cannot be made any redder or bluer. If gray is added to a color, darkening it, that is said to produce a shade. If white is added to a color, that produces a tint, commonly called a pastel...

House Design get Award, Ravine House
Has the design stood the test of time? I should note that the interiors of this project are wonderful. The allusions to Pierre Chareau's Maison de Verre are subtle yet powerful. The exterior "ornaments" remind me of the work of Holt Hinshaw Pfau Jones that was being published in the mid-1980's.
This house was designed nearly 20 year ago. After it was completed it was extensively published in the architectural press, the design won a PA Award. It made the cover of magazines from Japan, the U.S., and Britain.

Color and Texture, Beehive houses
The famous for its beehive houses is Harran, the design of which goes back to the 3rd century BC. Beehive houses these mud-brick houses, held together with logs, take a conical shape and can actually be large elaborate structures with multiple rooms.
They provide excellent abodes for this region because they are cool in hot Harran's summers, but warm in bitter winters.Today most are used for storage. The design of these is thought to have been unchanged for at least 3,000 years, and some were still in use as dwellings until the 1980s.

House in Vancouver, Concrete Structure
Although I like the overall form of the house (except for the prominent garage), I really don't like how they left the concrete unfinished, it would look better, and make the windows really pop, if it was painted white or stained black. Vancouver has enough dull grey cloudy skies, the last thing it needs is more grey concrete. Also the concrete wall and metal gate is very unfriendly and out of character with the rest of the neighbourhood.
This is a new house in Vancouver, BC, Canada. It's out near UBC. The house was built in 2003 and designed by James Cheng, who also designed the recently finished Shutters building over in Victoria, which by the way features white concrete everywhere, and it looks amazing!
